chaff of futures trading information.

options trading books, and many more products for trading. On top of

QUESTION - Application to Options
"All your reviews of systems seem to be of futures trading.
Are these outcomes also applicable to the options on these underlying
futures, or does trading commodities options require different
systems altogether?"
Editor-in-Chief
Courtney Smith -
The reason that we only test futures systems is that it is impossible
to test systems for options trading. We cannot get intraday data
on every strike and so on. You can obviously use options in conjunction
with futures trading systems. However, the results will be different
because you have added an additional instrument to the mix. Over
the long run, I would imagine that the results would be similar
but the attributes of the options and the futures systems could
be quite different. For example, it may be that using a long term
trend following system to buy long dated options may work fine
but using a two to three day system to buy the same options will
not work well at all.

QUESTION - Options on Futures
"Is there a letter that specializes in options on futures?
If so, how's their performance?
Editor-in-Chief
Courtney Smith -
Yes, there are letters that specialize in options. The Opportunities
in Options letter is the most famous. I highly recommend MacMillan's
Option Strategy Letter though it also covers stock and stock index
options. Unfortunately, there is really no one who tracks options
letters. We are the only people who track futures letters and
we don't track options letters because of the difficulty in tracking
options. The data is poor. I'd like to ask our readers if they
have any experience with any letters and which ones they liked.

QUESTION - Examples / Info on Short Selling Futures Options
"Where could I get examples/info on short selling futures
options both calls and puts? I need to understand how profits/losses
happen if the buyer executes or not. Does this make sense? Thanks
for your time. I enjoy the site."
Editor-in-Chief
Courtney Smith -
Good question. This is a complex question to answer. As a result,
the true answer is: depends. First, are these naked call/put writes
or covered? Do you have access to option evaluation software to
determine if the options are fairly valued? Let me ponder the subject
some more and write an article for this site. I will likely base
it on the chapter in my Options Strategies book. |
